Nixon newspaper prints final issue

After 20 years of providing Gonzales County with consistent coverage and good reading, a stalwart of information is throwing in the towel and picking up the trowel.

On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Cow Country Courier printed its last issue.

Wendle Scott, the newspaper’s publisher, recently decided to close up shop for good. At 83, Wendle, who says he has enjoyed being at the publication’s helm since its inception in May 1993, believes its time to move on.

“I’m just getting too old,” he laughs. “As much as I’ve loved having the newspaper and serving Nixon and Gonzales County, there’s too much to keep up with – especially from a financial standpoint. It’s time to retire.”

So instead of worrying about deadlines, Wendle says he’s turning to the trowel.

“I’m going to immerse myself in my garden,” he says. “I’ve got that to keep me busy, and I have an orchard as well.”

All in all, Wendle knows he has done the best he could to give communities like Smiley, Nixon and even Stockdale quality coverage and informative reading. And it’s certainly no surprise that after two decades of service, he will miss not only providing the “scoop” on goings-on in the area, but also postulating to others what could be perceived as an alternative perspective on the world itself.

“I tend to be less conservative than most Texans,” he says. “But I think it’s important for people to see things in a different light – being more open-minded. I’ve really enjoyed being able to support a viewpoint that’s different from the norm.”
