ATASCOSA COUNTY — A former Nixon police officer was killed Sunday while transporting a juvenile to a Jourdanton detention center, officials say.

The Texas Highway Patrol reported that at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Officer Mike Villarreal with the Pearsall Police Department was transporting a juvenile to the Juvenile Detention Facility in Jourdanton when his patrol car collided with another vehicle.

The head-on collision, which claimed the life of Villarreal, 51, of San Antonio, occurred five miles west of Jourdanton on Highway 97.

Troopers say Villarreal’s patrol car hit head on with a Ford F-350 pickup, and that he died at the scene. The juvenile and the driver of the other vehicle were reported to have sustained critical injuries, and were airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Villarreal worked for the Nixon Police Department from 2011 to 2014, where he served the community as a police officer as well as a code enforcement officer.

Officials say the crash is still under investigation.
