Commissioners looking for insurance on out buildings

GONZALES - County commissioners on Monday voted to begin advertising to find the best deal on property insurance - a move County Judge David Bird said was needed to protect storage sheds that house county equipment from bad weather or other kinds of potential damage.

All of the “big” Gonzales County buildings and equipment have been insured with the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) since 2005, but the storage sheds themselves are not insured.

Bird said the hunt for insurance became so extensive that they needed to hire insurance consultant Don Gray to help find a suitable provider.

“He goes out and bargains with all these companies,” Bird said. “He tries to work out the best deals he can.”

Bird explained that Gray will network extensively with a variety of insurance companies while the county advertises for them, aiming to have acquired a deal before the commissioners June 18 meeting.

“The contents - such as maintainers, loaders and other equipment - are insured, but the sheds are not,” Bird said. “So the specifics and requests for proposals will go out spread out over the time period from now until the commissioners’ second June meeting.”
