GISD cancels election, sends resolution to lege

GONZALES — Monday’s Gonzales Independent School District monthly board meeting turned into a de-facto election, which may have come as a surprise even to the candidates.

Since GISD board members Josie Smith-Wright, Dist. 4, and Tom Lester, Dist. 7, were unopposed in their re-election bids, they were declared winners by default and were thus re-elected on the spot. Superintendent Dr. Kim Strozier thanked them for their service and those in attendance agreed with a round of applause. Since the election was cancelled, the district will save between $3,000-5,000.

The board also passed a resolution opposing certain bills making the rounds in the Texas legislature that cast Pre-K funding in a negative tone. The board stated several reasons why funding full-day Pre-K education in Texas schools is a benefit to communities and how it helps in early child development. They called on the lawmakers to expand funding for this service rather than curtailing it.

In other news, the board:

•Recognized the boys and girls soccer teams for their inaugural season of play

•Heard a construction report from the various projects ongoing across the district

•Approved a division order of a 602-acre tract for EOG Resources

•Extended their depository contract with Sage Capital Bank with board members Ross Hendershot and Glenn Menking abstaining

•Reviewed the annual investment report
