Family Dollar coming to Waelder - Construction to begin this month

WAELDER – The people of Waelder will soon have a new place to shop as officials say Family Dollar has finalized plans to begin construction on a new store this month.

With the new store, new jobs are apparently on the horizon as well and citizens of the community are welcoming the business with open arms.

City council members on Tuesday voted to “abandon” ownership of a 20-foot wide alley on the border of an acre-wide tract of land just west of town on Highway 90. Ownership of the property will be transferred to Family Dollar that now owns the acre of land as well.

Waelder Mayor Mike Harris said Family Dollar finalized the deal with the city last week and the city has already established the water and sewer hookups. Construction on the facility is expected to begin in mid-September.

“We’re really looking forward to this new dollar store,” Harris said. “Having a new business in town is always a good thing. It’ll bring new jobs as well as a service to the community.”

Councilman Rocky Quintero is also eager to welcome the new store to Waelder and said he sees this as a “sign of good things to come.”

“This is the first ever retail chain-type store Waelder has ever had,” he said. “It will bring some jobs and people shopping from other communities hopefully. I am really looking forward to the new store, and I think it is a step in the right direction for the Waelder community.”
