Inquirer rakes in Gulf Coast Press awards

GALVESTON — The Gonzales Inquirer won several awards at the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association’s 2014 Better Newspaper Contest, garnering 3rd place in sweepstakes among semi-weekly newspapers. Results were announced during the association’s convention last weekend.

The Inquirer won first place in Special Sections for the 2014 Come and Take It section as well as a first place in feature photos for photos taken at the Rotary Club’s Chicken Flying Contest during Come and Take It by José Torres and Winterfest photos by Erik McCowan.

The Inquirer won second place in general excellence with judge’s calling it a “very well put together newspaper.”

Reporter Rob Ford won second place for news writing. Ford’s coverage of the arrest of two Waelder police officers were submitted for the competition.

In the news photos competition, the Inquirer won second place for shots of a major crash in I-10 by Valerie Reddell and an explosion and fire at an oil well in south Gonzales County by Erik McCowan.

In sports, the Inquirer won third place in both the Sports Photos and Sports Coverage categories. The paper also brought home a third place in Display Advertising.

Also during the weekend convention, publisher Valerie Reddell was elected to a two-year term as a director of the organization.
