GONZALES – A driver fleeing from police escalated a simple traffic ticket into a trip to jail on felony charges, police reports show.

At 10:59 p.m. Feb. 9, Officer Gabriel Trevino saw a grey Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on Dunning St. at a high rate of speed, Capt. Allen Taylor said. The driver of the car disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of Dunning and College, and continued east on Dunning.

Trevino activated his emergency lights to make a stop, but the car sped on — eventually coming to a brief stop at the intersection of Dunning and Church St.

The car then sped off again with Trevino in pursuit, turning south onto Church St., then west on Qualls before pulling into a private driveway at that intersection. The driver fled on foot as Trevino pulled into the driveway.

Trevino spoke with the car’s passenger, who identified the driver as Jon Anthony Casares, 21, of Gonzales. Officer Trey Tunis then arrived at the scene and spotted a man standing at the east side of the house. After identifying him as Casares, Tunis detained him for fleeing the scene.

Casares admitted to being the owner of the vehicle and having the key. Casares was arrested and charged with felony evading, and later taken to Gonzales County Jail.

At 11:12 p.m. Feb. 13, Officer Gabriel Trevino was dispatched to Gonzales Memorial Hospital in reference to a possible sexual assault. After speaking with a caseworker with Bluebonnet Trails Community Services in Seguin, Trevino learned that the victim was a client of theirs and that they suspected she had been sexually assaulted.

After speaking with the victim, police took her to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner examination. The case is under investigation.

At 5:45 p.m. Feb. 11, Officer Victor Izaguirre was dispatched to the 700 block of Williams St. in reference to a burglary of a habitation. Upon arrival Izaguirre spoke with the victim, who said when she arrived home from work she noticed two items were missing — an iPad and a jar containing $80 in change.

Taylor said the intruder may have gained entry into the house via an unlocked back door. The case is under investigation.
