Council affirms guide for board service

The Gonzales City Council affirmed appointments to the Main Street board, and approved a handbook designed to guide persons serving on city boards and committees.

“This book will outline the duties and responsibilities of boards as well as establishing criteria of board appointment,” Gonzales city manager Allen Barnes told the City Council at its Jan. 8 meeting. “It also outlines the procedures of how to run the meeting, it talks about the history of each board, and what makes a quorum and what officers are included.”

Barnes also said the application process for those wishing to serve on boards and committees allows applicants to prioritize their interest for the boards and committees. He also said the handbook addresses the limitation of service on only one board, which allows for opportunities for more people to serve on more boards.

In addition, the City Council approved the establishment of new advisory boards and committees (which have no administrative duties): Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and J.B. Wells Park Advisory Board. The council also re-established the Museum Advisory Board, Beautification Advisory Board and Cemetery Committee.

The council approved appointments to the Main Street board, with Michelle London, Melissa Taylor and Susan Weber receiving two-year terms (through Dec. 31, 2014), and George Wilhelm chosen for a one-year term (through Dec. 31, 2013). Reappointed to the board for two-year terms (through Dec. 31, 2014) were Egon Barthels, Kacey Lindemann Butler and Connie Dolezal. Appointments were retroactive to Jan. 1.
