YOAKUM — Flooding of the Guadalupe River has resulted in the closure of US 183 at the community of Hochheim, just north of the intersection of SH 111 in northern DeWitt County.

Those traveling between Gonzales and Cuero must find alternate routes, such as US 90A east of Gonzales to Shiner, State Highway 95 from Shiner south to US 77A in Yoakum, then south to US 183 just north of Cuero. This suggested alternate route is outlined in red on the attached map.

It is unknown at this time how long this closure will be in effect. Please monitor DriveTexas.org or the TxDOT Yoakum Twitter feed for the latest updates.

Flash flooding is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Texas. As little as six inches of water can float some vehicles. If you encounter a flooded road, Turn Around, Don't Drown.

• Never try to walk, swim or drive through swift water.

• Stay informed about weather conditions when you are driving.

• If your vehicle stalls in deep water, leave it and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.

• Don't move, tamper with or drive around barriers blocking a low-water crossing. Penalties range from $200 to $1,000 and/or two years in jail.
