Inferno destroys Harwood dwelling

Gonzales County fire inspectors are sifting through the rubble today of what used to be the Harwood home of Riley Salas, searching for clues to the cause of a holiday-week blaze battled by firefighters from three area fire departments.

Firefighters worked feverishly to save the one-story home from being engulfed in flames Tuesday, but the inferno proved too quick and fierce for fire crews to control in time.

Firemen from Gonzales, Waelder and Ottine battled the blaze at the residence of Allen Spinks for more than three hours before finally extinguishing it. Spinks is the owner of record for the home, but currently lives in Midland and rents the residence.

According to Capt. Glen Lohse with the Gonzales Fire Department, the fire resulted in a total loss of the home.

“Fortunately, there were no injuries,” Lohse said. “Riley Salas, the home’s occupant, was at work when it caught fire.”

Lohse said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
