AUSTIN – A modern-day western movie filmed in Gonzales will be shown tomorrow at the Marches Hall here.

“The Garden and the Wilderness” was filmed in Gonzales and in Waelder at the ranch of co-producer Gene Smith, who was active in the local theater community before he died in 2011.

“We were honored to have our film featured in this year’s selections for the Houston Film Commission’s Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase, a selection of this year’s best short films by filmmakers from across the state of Texas,” Director Craig Whitney said.

The movie deals with a private hunting ranch in central Texas. The owner dies and his heirs decide rather than deal with taxes and other headaches, they will just sell it. An employee is worried about losing his job and there are other social issues to deal with.

The Austin Film Society will host the screening of the Texas Filmmaker’s Showcase film at 8 p.m.

“The Garden and the Wilderness” premiered in 2011 at the Rome International Film Festival and has been screened at numerous festivals nationwide. The Showcase also features the Student Academy Award nominated documentary “Vultures of Tibet” and Sundance honoree "Hellion."
